A Legacy in the Making: 21st Century Plastics Co.
01.08.2026
The Story of 21st Century Plastics begins in the small town of Potterville, Michigan. In 1988, Gordon Wright set out to create a company that could transform plastic into a wide range of useful products. Partnering with his friend, Greg Dobie, the two built a facility equipped with advanced molding machines capable of melting plastic and forming it into precision-made parts. In its early years, the company produced components such as car parts, sprinkler system pieces, trophies, and even jump rope handles.
Over time, 21st Century Plastics discovered its true calling—manufacturing seating. Not just any seating, but the kind found in stadiums, theaters, and auditoriums around the world. Whether watching a thrilling sports event or enjoying a film in a comfortable theater chair, there’s a good chance that seat was crafted by 21st Century Plastics. The company has proudly contributed to projects for iconic venues such as Yankee Stadium in New York, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indiana, Minnesota Vikings’ U.S. Bank Stadium, and numerous major league soccer stadiums.
One of the most distinctive aspects of 21st Century Plastics is that it is employee-owned. Every team member is also a part owner, fostering a culture of shared pride and accountability. When the company succeeds, everyone shares in that success.
The company is unique because it utilizes large-scale injection molding machines—some nearly the size of a semi-truck. These machines generate immense force to keep molds sealed while molten plastic is injected to create durable, high-quality components.
The team at 21st Century Plastics is known for its speed, precision, and problem-solving expertise. The company works closely with its largest customer, Irwin Seating Company—a family-owned business with over a century of experience crafting audience seating.
Today, approximately ninety dedicated professionals make up the 21st Century Plastics team. Many have been with the company for over a decade, and several members of the leadership team have dedicated 25 to 30 years of service—some since the very beginning.
The story of 21st Century Plastics is one of perseverance, innovation, and teamwork. It’s a testament to how a small, determined company can grow to make a global impact—proving that when people believe in what they do and work together toward a shared vision, they can build something truly exceptional.
